FEATURES: The McNair House was built around 1895 and was James Archibald NcNair's first house from 1901 to 1904. Mr. McNair, also known as the Shingle King of North America, was the President and General Manager of the Hastings Shingle Manufacturing Company Ltd. which was the largest shingle mill in the world at that time. While there is no way to find out how much the McNair House resembles the original structure and how much materials left are originally dated back to the 1900's, the heritage home has distinctive architectural cues from that Victorian Queen Anne-era such as patterned shingle sidings (imbrication), finials decorated gables, offset porch, bay windows, spindlework and jigsawn spandrels over windows and porch.

A recent renovation includes new paint job throughout, refinished original fir floors on main and top floors, and updated bathrooms. This home features wide baseboards, 10' ceilings, wide hallways, plenty of long tall windows (some with stained glass), and various different styles of moldings throughout. Up a few steps to the covered front porch, you enter the formal foyer with an antique chandelier from the 20's. To the right are the partitioned sunlit formal living room and formal dining room with large stained windows. The antique chandelier in the dining room was once fueled by natural gas for the top bulbs. At the back of the house is a very spacious kitchen featuring an antique style fridge, antique range with 6 burners gas stove & double electric ovens, a long wooden antique buffet cabinet, wooden center island with white Italian Carrara marble countertop, lovely wainscotting, and a handy pantry room.
